BGCC Member Graduates as Top Cadet of Firefighter Academy Turning Personal Tragedy into Purpose

For Club member Leland, experiencing two house fires was life-changing. After losing so much, he made a decision: he would become a firefighter to help others.

Leland has turned that dream into reality thanks to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago’s (BGCC) employment program and support from the Black Fire Brigade. At just 22, he’s a certified EMT, mastered the City of Chicago’s emergency protocols, and recently graduated as one of the top cadets in his firefighter academy class.

“I just want to help someone that was in the same position I was in,” Leland said. “I know how it feels to lose everything you know in a couple of minutes.”

Through BGCC’s workforce employment program, Leland gained mentorship, career connections, and practical skills that opened doors. “My mentors at BGCC took me in, and instantly, we had a connection. We were laughing, cracking jokes,” Leland said. “They helped open so many doors of opportunity for me. I have connections with so many firefighters. And now I have so much knowledge and advice. I really appreciate all they did for me.”

Leland now works part-time at a fire department in the Chicago suburbs. His ultimate goal is to continue serving communities in need.

“The sky’s the limit for this remarkable young man,” TJ Crump, Leland’s BGCC mentor, said. “His story is a testament to the power of determination, the impact of mentorship, and the bright future that awaits those who dare to dream big. Our hearts are bursting with pride.”

Leland first joined the Club when he was 6 years old, going to Summer Camp. He loved playing basketball with his friends and learning to swim—even though he hated swimming then.

He said he was supported as a young man at the Club, where people cared about him and treated him like one of their own.

“I always knew I wanted to help people,” Leland said. “We go through a lot of drills at the academy, but my favorite was always search and rescue. When I went through those drills, I knew I was where I was meant to be.”
