Journey to the West Year 4: Youth Enjoy
the Wonders of Nature in Wyoming, Idaho
As Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago member Terrell sat at the base of a cave, gazing out over Idaho’s breathtaking landscape, he took a deep breath and marveled at what he had just accomplished.
“I can’t believe I’m here right now and I just did that,” Terrell said. “I never thought in a million years I would do something like this.”
Terrell had just hiked 2,000 feet of elevation across three miles of rugged mountain terrain — an achievement that many never experience in their lifetime. He was among 16 participants in the fourth annual Journey to the West, a 9-day adventure across Wyoming and Idaho.
For four consecutive years, BGCC members, ages 18-24, have had the opportunity to explore the natural beauty of the western states through this all-expenses-paid trip, thanks to Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy and United Airlines. The Journey to the West program gives urban youth the chance to experience the outdoors like never before, while also learning about careers in tourism.
The impact of this trip is undeniable. In a post-trip survey, 100% of participants reported a deeper connection with nature and a newfound desire to spend more time in nature.
“It’s a life-changing experience,” participant Damarieye said. “We got to disconnect from our phones and just immerse ourselves in the mountains and nature.”
During the trip, the group went white-water rafting, visited a mountain sheep museum, attended a rodeo, and spotted wildlife like beavers, moose, and elk. But the experience wasn’t just about exploring — it was a time for reflection as well. Each morning, participants practiced yoga and mindfulness to reconnect with themselves, a practice that left a lasting impression. According to the survey, 91% of the youth said their sense of purpose and direction in life grew after the trip.
“My road ahead is a lot less foggy,” one participant reflected.
For many, this trip marked a meaningful pause before stepping into the next phase of their lives, whether it be college, trade school, or starting their career.
“It was amazing to just feel like a kid again,” said participant Kylan. “To be given the opportunity to just play and be a kid. I don’t take that for granted.”
Thanks to the support of programs like Journey to the West, BGCC members are not only discovering the beauty of the natural world, but they are also uncovering a clearer sense of purpose and possibility for their futures.
