Linda and Bill Gantz with Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago Club Members

A Commitment Through the Generations

When Linda Gantz joined the Woman's Board of Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago in 1988, she had no idea she would be bringing her family on a multi-generational journey of service, commitment, and generosity that would span more than 25 years.

We sat down with Linda and her husband Bill, their daughters Caroline Burns and Leslie McLamore, and five of their grandchildren to hear more about what Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago means to the Gantz family.

Why did you first get involved with Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago (BGCC)?

In 1988, my youngest child, Caroline, left home for college. My children were all out of the house, and I needed to focus my energy on something new. My longtime friend, Bonnie Stearns, was already serving on the Woman's Board at BGCC and encouraged me to get involved. It struck a chord for me; it was a way I could give back and help those less fortunate discover their path to success.

What has motivated you to stay involved with the organization for so long?

Years ago, I listened to one of our Club members, David, share his story at a Board meeting. Here is a wonderful and dynamic young man who has endured a traumatic life event that most of us cannot imagine. But because of his Boys & Girls Club, he overcame that and moved forward with his life in a positive way. He went on to college and worked at one of our Clubs to support young kids the way he felt supported in his youth. Is there anything better than that?

Your daughter Caroline joined the Woman's Board, and you have brought some of your grandchildren to the Youth of the Year event to hear Club members tell their story. Why is it important that your whole family be a part of this organization?

I feel we have an obligation to give back. Not everyone grows up in a supportive household. Not everyone has access to opportunity. Many children are forced to go without. It is important for me to share the experience of Youth of the Year with my kids and grandkids so they can see the incredible impact BGCC has on every child who walks through the doors of a Boys & Girls Club.

How would you like your family to carry on this legacy in the future?

My daughters are both passionate about this legacy of giving. My grandchildren love meeting BGCC Club members and are always asking about ways they can help. Caroline and Leslie both set an example for their children, showing them to be compassionate and how to make an impact. Caroline is excited to join the Woman's Board and see that the organization will continue to thrive.

If there is one thing you could tell people about why they should support Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago, what would it be?

Your contribution doesn't have to be enormous to make a huge impact. You can take that first step and you help one child. And that's what it's all about: one child at a time. You walk into the Club, you see their smiling faces, you hear their laughter, and you know that you have made a difference that will last a lifetime.
